Friday evening: Meet your guide at Atami Station, walk to hotel, check in, free time.

Saturday: Private Guided Day Tour: JAPANESE CULTURE & OLD TOKAIDO FOOT HIGHWAY

Discover National Treasures & other Japanese cultural experiences, hike a short section of the old Tokaido foot highway that has linked Japan’s new capital of Tokyo with former capitals Kyoto and Osaka for five centuries.

09:00 Meet your guide in hotel lobby, taxi to MOA Museum of ART to enjoy national treasures and important cultural properties. Café/teahouse/Japanese lunch. Taxi to Old Tokaido foot highway, 3km walk to Yamanaka Castle Ruins, scene of penultimate battle of Japan’s Warring States Period (16C). Fuji views weather permitting. Bus to Genbegawa World Water System Heritage, short walk to Mishima Station, train back to Atami and walk to hotel arriving about 6pm. Free time.

Sunday: Private Guided Day Tour:

AMERICA OPENS UP JAPAN AT SHIMODA

Walking tour (3kms) of the quaint port village which is ground zero for the US/Japan and Russia/Japan relationships.

08:30 Meet your guide in hotel lobby, taxi to Atami Station, 1.5 hour train ride south along Izu Peninsula’s pretty coastline, great views of Sagami Bay and Izu Islands. Arrive at Shimoda station and taxi to Gyokusenji. Japan’s First Foreign Diplomatic Mission (1857, USA). Then stroll around picturesque Shimoda harbour to famous Shimoda Burger for a fresh snapper burger lunch. Stroll Perry Road to Ryosenji Temple where Admiral Perry concluded US/Japan Treaty. Train back to Atami and walk to your hotel arriving about 7pm.

Monday morning: Transfer from hotel to Atami Station, tour concludes.
